I decided to start close to home for my first piece of proof. It took visits to three Dallas area news sites and time combing through some disturbing and depressing material, but at last I found this gem amidst the muck: Exhibit 1 that the world's a good place.
It's been insanely hot in Dallas this summer. We're on track to beat the record for consecutive days in triple digits and it feels like you're sticking your face in a Thanksgiving day oven when you walk outside. We seek sanctuary in swimming pools. The water might be tepid but the evaporation action on your skin somehow keeps it refreshing. The downside of pools is that they're dangerous. There have been a number of drownings in Dallas this summer, and it sucks.
But you know what doesn't suck? When an 8-year-old stops another would-be drowning by saving a toddler at his apartment pool. The pool was noisy, the adults were distracted, and this little dude took action. The 8-year-old, named Jesus, said "I knew I had to do something" when he noticed bubbles weren't coming up from the toddler. So he strapped on his goggles and dived in. He got the little one above water and yelled for his dad. Adults did CPR while they waited for an ambulance [more proof]. Jesus prayed. The tyke was breathing again by the time paramedics arrived.
Jesus said "I feel really proud. Sometimes I don't know what to make a decision on, but this time, I made it just in time."
Jesus showed cajones, quick thinking, and concern for a stranger's life. And he's damn cute to boot. That he did what he did is a little piece of proof that it's not all bad.
